Hradčany

Hradčany

Hradčany is considered part of the historical center of Prague and is often referred to as the “Castle District,” as it consists of Prague Castle as well as its surrounding and related environs.

The area is located above Lesser Town on the opposite side of the Vltava River from Old Town and New Town. Hradčany includes not only Prague Castle itself, but St Vitus Cathedral, the Basilica of Saint George, the Old Royal Palace, Golden Lane, Dalibor Tower, Black Tower, the Royal Summer Palace, and the Royal Gardens.

In the western region of Hradčany visitors can find many interesting churches, including Strahov Monastery, Loreta, and Capuchin Monastery. Most official state visits to the Czech Republic begin at the square in front of the main gate to Prague Castle, known as “Hradčanské náměstí.”

Hradčany is filled with not only noble estates and palaces, but also many small streets and romantic viewpoints. Visitors can also find some of the best views of the Lesser Quarter, Old Town, and New Town in Prague from Hradčany. This area is a must-see!
