The Institute of Gentlewomen

In the medieval period the site of this building was occupied by a number of dwellings, including, from the sixteenth century, the Renaissance palace of the Lords of Rožmberk.

In 1755 Empress Maria Theresa founded an institute for impoverished noble ladies, which was designed by Anselmo Lurago, based on the designs of Nicolo Pacassi. The portico above the entrance features sculptures by Josef Klein, and the chapel inside the building is decorated with frescoes by Petr Molitor.
